Over a look weekend in late 2016 I used my chance to explore more of Accors rather small food print in Malaysia and drove down to Melaka, one of Malaysias biggest cities and a short 90 minutes drive from the capital Kuala Lumpur.
Melaka is a famous place for food but does not necessarily feature a beautiful scenery or any notable activities, besides some museums and an ancient church. While it is next to the ocean there are no real beaches and you can’t at all go for a beach vacation due to the polluted waters.
The Novotel Melaka just opened earlier in 2016 so it is still a very new hotel, which results in everything looking new and clean. Luckily there was no feeling of “just opened” with the staff, as everyone was friendly and seemed to know what they were doing. I arrived by car and found a free carpark that is shared with the hotel next to Novotel and featured plenty of parking, which was very convenient.
Upon entering the lobby I was invited to check-in at the member desk, where a friendly attendant offered me a spin on the lucky wheel, which was apparently an ongoing promotion for the opening. I won a free umbrella! 🙂
The lobby was very spacious and showcased the typical Novotel brand design, it was a bit dark but still alright. During the check-in I was informed about the benefits at this hotel, which included access to a club, very impressive for a 4-star property. I also received an upgrade into the highest room category which was the suite.
The room was located on the upper floors and was huge. Upon entering to the right was a guest WC and then a walkway leading into the living area of the suite.
Behind the guest bathroom was a walk-in wardrobe and luggage rack with plenty of space that joined into the main bathroom which was very spacious. The suite featured double basins as well as a separate bathtub and shower.
Toiletries were branded as Novotel as it is the norm with this chain. The quality was fine but nothing you would steal and bring back home.
The main room of the suite was separated into a living area with a sofa, desk and TV as well as the bed room with another TV and a big and comfortable king size bed. The living area could be separated by sliding doors.
I loved the room as it was easily the most spacious Novotel I have ever been staying at and the quality and features of the room were definitely above what I expected. The hotel also provides fast and free WIFI and the suite had plenty of international power outlets and even USB chargers!
I also checked out the club on the 16th floor, where guests can have complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and happy hour cocktails with snacks. While the spread for all 3 servings was rather small and the quality was just average I was still impressed that this hotel has a big and nice lounge. The lounge even featured a kids room as well as some TVs.
It is worth noting that the hotel is a bit out of the city center, and it doesn’t offer anything in terms of views. With a car you will be in the center of Melaka within a few minutes driving, walking can be also an option depending on how accustomed one is to the climate. I would definitely recommend coming by car or renting one, as taxi availability in Melaka is not that good.
The Novotel Melaka also has a pool, gym and a pool bar, which was not opened during my stay. Another positive surprise to me was 24h room service, which isn’t offered in all 4-star hotels and I don’t think I had it in any other Novotel before.
Concluding the Novotel Melaka is a very solid 4-star property with an amazing value for money. Membership recognition was fantastic as I booked the smallest room category and got the biggest suite. The hotel is still new but everything seems to be working fine already. Quality of amenities and service is high as well. The only let down is the rather uneventful and slightly inconvenient location. I would definitely stay here again and can absolutely recommend the hotel as long as you bring your own transportation.
