Before flying out to Bangkok on a cheap Gulf Air business fare via Bahrain, I stopped for a visit at the Cathay Pacific First & Business lounge in Frankfurt terminal 2.
After the rather inconvenient arrival with the Ibis Kelsterbach shuttle I was looking forward to a nice breakfast, coffee and stable WIFI. Unfortunately I ended up finding only one of those at the lounge.
The lounge was conveniently located more or less opposite the gate my flight would be leaving from. I liked the design of the entrance which looked really sleek and modern. Once through the door I was greeted by an older lady with not a particularly warm welcome but it did the job.
The lounge consists of two rooms separated by the kitchen / employee area. Right after the desk there is a group of lounge chairs, some business centre style cubicles at the side and a small self-service drink corner opposite, as well as a magazine and newspapers display.
Further to the right was another room that was bigger, with a buffet, dining tables and more lounge chairs. The furniture had some more or less visible wear and tear and while looking fine upon closer inspection there were multiple stains more or less everywhere. Some of the lounge chairs provided power sockets on the side tables.
The WIFI in the lounge is provided by Deutsche Telekom, which seems to be the norm in most German airports, it was really fast for once but unfortunately the connection kept cutting off on all my devices after a few minutes each time.
The buffet was a big let down as it consisted exclusively of some small sandwiches, cold omelettes and one sort of cereals with milk or yoghurt. It turned out the yoghurt was expired, which the staff acquitted with “that shouldn’t be” (I am not sure if that counts as an apology) and then sorted it out. There was also a very small selection of fruits, alcohol and the usual soft drinks.
The lounge had a one touch coffee machine that produced incredibly bad coffee and other hot drinks, I think it was by far the worst machine coffee I ever had.
At the far end of the lounge were the bathrooms including two shower rooms, the bathrooms at least were nice and clean.
In conclusion I was very disappointed by this lounge, the food was bad, the lounge was not maintained very well, the service distant and not attentive. For a first and business class lounge of a highly regarded airline that is somewhat an embarrassment. I do sincerely hope that the state of this lounge was due to the fact that there were no actual Cathay Pacific flights.
