For a short notice trip to Asia I was lucky to find a cheap Gulf Air fare to Bangkok, via Bahrain, more or less via accident while browsing their website. While Gulf Air is not as grand as the other Gulf carriers the price was tempting enough to book.
After leaving the disappointing Cathay Pacific lounge still hungry for breakfast I was looking forward to flying this “exotic” airline finally for the first time.

After returning from a trip to Europe in September thanks to the cheap Qatar Airways fare sale ex Ho Chi Minh City I needed a room for one night before taking my flight back to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this time hopefully in a slightly more modern plane than the outbound flight.
Normally the Pullman Saigon Central is my go-to place in Ho Chi Minh City, it is easily one of the best Pullmans out there and I have stayed countless times at this property. For the date I was in Saigon tho it turned out to be outrageously expensive and I decided to branch out into a non chain property this time.

A few months ago Qatar Airways published an incredibly deal for flights departing Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and as I had to book a trip to Europe anyway I took advantage and ticketed a flight from Vietnam to Germany.
As I am not living in Vietnam I had to position there first and booked a separate flight with Malaysia Airlines for this. I have flown this route and carrier countless times and reviewed it here, but this flight presented me a very special and very outdated aircraft.

After visiting the rather disappointing Plaza Premium lounge Kuala Lumpur I was even kind of looking forward to my 18 hours trip on Emirates A380 economy to Barcelona via Dubai.
Maybe it was a mix of the fact that the lounge was not much better than an economy flight and that I just wanted to be done with the trip but in the end the trip was still pretty decent. Now I won’t start flying these distances for fun in economy but if I have to Emirates is definitely a solid option.

Before embarking on my recent trip to Europe in Emirates A380 economy I had the chance to sample one of the very few independent contract lounges in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) Terminal 1.
Located in the satellite building that houses the C gates Plaza Premium lounge operates on the upper level and is a short way from the sky train. Besides being used by multiple airlines for premium passengers it is also part of Priority Pass and several credit cards like the Maybank 2 cards premier give access. As for Maybank cards be aware which cards give access as they like to shuffle it around every few months, of course without informing customers.

For a quick business trip I recently had to spend two nights in Shanghai where I had the chance to spend two nights at the former Grand Mercure Shanghai Central that just recently rebranded to the Pullman Shanghai Jing’an, named after the area it is located in.
While this was just a short stay and I partially paid by points I do like and prefer the Pullman brand in general so I had a certain expectation in terms of style and service. I left Shanghai with somewhat mixed feelings about this property, that does not really fit into the Pullman brand as of now.

For a long weekend in April I decided to explore Johor Bahru since I haven’t been there, despite living in Malaysia for years, as well as spending a day in Singapore which is right next to Johor Bahru town.
Johor Bahru does not have that many hotels especially if you are looking for something more upscale. The only chain hotel I found was the DoubleTree by Hilton which was somewhat pricey for a town like Johor and since I am not a member anyway I decided it wasn’t worth the money. Instead I went with the 4 star Amerin Hotel, which I booked through AirAsiaGo, that is located a short drive of 10 minutes away from Johor town.

While I normally focus on airline and hospitality related topics and reviews here I find it worthwhile to share one surprisingly good address for Italian food in Johor Bahru.
I always had trouble to find any good Italian places in Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur basically has nothing in that direction, unless you want to spend a couple of hundred dollars per person for something somewhat decent.

Over a long weekend in April 2017 I spent a night in Singapore after my short trip to Johor Bahru, Malaysia. As it was just one night and I did not need anything fancy I decided to go for the cheapest 5 star option Accor Hotels had on offer for that night, which ended up being the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy.
I paid a part of the rate with points which gave me a rather unpleasant experience before at the Pullman Riga Old Town which really made me feel anything but welcome, while later resolved I assume at least partially the unpleasant service was due to my “lack of spending” at that property.

After my rather unsatisfying flight to Dubai I wasn’t specifically looking forward to the return flight on Emirates Boing 777-300ER, since the business class product does not even feature direct aisle access on every seat.
Maybe it was due to my low expectations, the really nice time in the Emirates lounge in Dubais Terminal 3 at DXB or the fact this this 777 was equipped with the updated business class seat, but I ended up enjoying this flight a lot more than the A380 trip.
