For a short two nights stay in Hamburg in late summer last year I booked the INNSIDE by Melia Hamburg Hafen due to the reasonable price tag and it being a new hotel in a central location that I thought would be nice to check out.
From the pictures I could see that this hotel is following a very basic, northern sleek style, which I usually like. While the style was as expected everything else was unfortunately quite unpleasant.

I recently returned to the beautiful city of Munich in Germany and needed a hotel. On my last stay I booked the Novotel Munich City Arnulfpark and was very positively surprised. I also noticed that the building hosts an Ibis hotel as well, which takes up one half of the property.
As this was just a one night stay and Ibis hotels are very ‘upscale’ for the 3-stars category I decided to shake things up a bit and see how this hotel would compare to the Novotel.

On a recent return trip to Asia with Qatar Airways via Doha I was leaving from Frankfurt international airport (FRA) and had the chance to sample another lounge in terminal 1. I have been departing from this terminal before and wrote a review about one of the many Lufthansa lounges here.
I was a bit surprised about Qatar using terminal 1 in FRA as Qatar Airways is part of oneworld alliance and terminal 1 is primarily used by Lufthansa and other Star Alliance affiliates. I guess that is also the reason Qatar uses the Air Canada lounge since there are probably no non Star Alliance lounges in this terminal.

As frequent readers of this blog now I am often travelling from Germany to Lisbon, Portugal and vise versa. The route has not really many options if you want to fly in a full service carrier since only Portugals national airline TAP Portugal and Lufthansa fly.
I am not a big fan of TAP Portugal as mentioned several times before due to their LCC alike price unbundling, rather bad service, bad on time track record and outdated fleet. While said fleet should have been retrofitted with new seats by the beginning of this year that hasn’t happened. When I flew from Hamburg to Lisbon in August I finally got lucky tho and boarded onto one of the updated A319 in the TAP fleet.

On a recent return trip to Asia from Germany I had the chance to take my very first long haul flight from Berlins Tegel airport (TXL). I have been flying intra Germany and to some European destinations multiple times from TXL and, like for many others, it is by far not my favourite airport.
Tegel airport was supposed to be closed in favour of the upcoming infamous Berlin-Brandenburg airport (BER), that has not been finished to date despite being years behind it’s supposed opening date.

On my recent multi-city itinerary from Germany to Portugal I mixed flights from Lufthansa and TAP Portugal into one Lufthansa reservation. TAP Portugal charges ridiculous fees for credit card payments (so much to the self proclaimed status as magnificent full service carrier) and Lufthansa had the better timing for one of the flights.
Since both carriers are Star Alliance it was no problem to book them in one ticket and Lufthansa even advertised the better conditions with less payment fees, luggage included and seat selection, at least on paper…

After visiting the rather disappointing Plaza Premium lounge Kuala Lumpur I was even kind of looking forward to my 18 hours trip on Emirates A380 economy to Barcelona via Dubai.
Maybe it was a mix of the fact that the lounge was not much better than an economy flight and that I just wanted to be done with the trip but in the end the trip was still pretty decent. Now I won’t start flying these distances for fun in economy but if I have to Emirates is definitely a solid option.

Due to my family and business setup I am a frequent visitor to Portugal and usually fly multiple times every year into Lisbon. Being based in Asia I am struck with very limited options to get into Portugal, in fact there is no direct flight at all and the only carrier with a good product that flies one stop is Emirates. Sure you could fly BA or Lufthansa, but frequencies are limited and it is by far not as comfortable as Emirates, simply by having one leg on a short haul plane and one long flight on a sub-par long haul configuration.

During my summer trip to Germany in 2015 I spent one night in the Pullman Dresden Newa, which is a 4-star property centrally located in Dresden. Due to it’s central location in the historic part of the city the Pullman is a good base for both shopping and sightseeing.
Right opposite the Pullman Accor also built a much larger Ibis that features a solid 3-star product, to offer a more budget friendly option to travellers looking for the same central location as the Pullman.

Before my flight back to Kuala Lumpur on Oman Air I decided to spend one more night in Munich so I would have the day of my departure in the city for some shopping, since Oman Air flights from MUC depart in the late evening.
After my last stay in Munich in the alleged airport hotel Ibis Hallbergmoos was not that nice after all and the following nights in a 5-star Pullman in Riga were even worse, I decided to stick to Accors 4-star level, which provides a lot better value for money in European properties. The Novotel Munich City Arnulfpark seemed like a good choice for that and given that it was freezing cold in Munich with lots of snow, I had a good incentive to thoroughly review this hotel.
